Deribasovskaya Street

Perhaps Deribasovskaya Street may be called one of the most famous streets, not only in Odessa, but even in the whole Ukraine. This street is the place of lots of interesting stories, funny tales and anecdotes told by Odessa people. Once coming to Odessa, you'll know why Deribassovskaya St. is so loved. Let's start with the fact that you can see here on Deribasovskaya most sights of Odessa, from the architectural monuments from the 19th century, up to unique and original monuments. Many of the houses on Deribasovskaya St. once were the place of living or visiting for prominent historical figures, scientists and artists. Despite the fact that this street does not take to the sea, Deribasovskaya St. is still the main street of the city and a favorite place for the citizens and guests of Odessa. Deribasovskaya Street was called Gimnazskaya because since 1804 here has been a second largest high school in Russia (the first was the Imperial Lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo). After that, it just changed the name, and it became known as Deribasovskaya in 1941. On the facade of the Lyceum on Deribasovskaya, which is now called the Richelieu lyceum, is placed relief portrait of Dmitri Mendeleev, who once taught here in due time.
Interesting fact – the pavement of Deribasovskaya street is lined with granite, obtained from the lava of the Mount Vesuvius. This granite was imported from Naples - hometown of the first mayor of Odessa Don Jose de Ribas, after whom the street was named. Pavement looks fine for today , because granite pavers can serve virtually forever.
Walking down the street Deribasovskaya is quite like a excursion. You will enjoy the unique buildings that were built in the architectural style of the 19th century. You can also learn the names of famous people who once lived here or was just passing through. For example, Alexander Pushkin spent two years working in the office of the Governor-General in the 24th house. Legendary scout N.A.Geft lived for a year in the third house.
Deribasovskaya street is a favourite place for many people, as well as Odessa is the favourite city for them. Many songs are about Deribasovskaya street, there is a lot of stories about this place, and famous soviet director Leonid Gaidai shot a comedy which has a catchy title «Weather Is Good on Deribasovskaya, It Rains Again on Brighton Beach ".
