Khmelnitsky city is named after the notorious historical person, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. A monument of Bogdan Khmelnitsky is the first thing for the tourists to see after arrival at the railway station of Khmelnitsky.
At the railway station you also can see the Main Post office of Khmelnitsky. On a high pedestal in the middle of the station square stands a bronze figure of the famous Ukrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky was born in 1595. He studied at the Kiev-Mohyla collegium in the Jesuit school in Lviv. He professed Orthodoxy. A good command at Ukrainian, Polish, French, Turkish and Latin helped him to make a brilliant political career
He participated in the Polish-Turkish War on the side of Poland. He was captured by Turks, and after the liberation, attacked the Turks with the Zaporozhian Cossacks. In the Russian-Polish War, he fought against the Russians. He defended the interests of the Cossacks.
As for the monument of Hetman, in his right hand Hetman Bohdan confidently holds a mace, and the left has the agreement about the union of Ukraine and Russia.
Of course, there isn’t the only glorious monument of Hetman Bohdan here in Khmelnytsky. Also there are many other attractions, such as ancient Church of the Nativity of the Virgin 1837, Petrovsky Music and Drama Theatre, the monuments on the Proskurovsky street, a monument made with the wreckage of strategic intercontinental missiles SS-19 and even a monument to Baron Münchhausen.
